Jakob, living in a Polish ghetto towards the end of the second world war, overhears on a German radio that the Russians are only 300 miles away. He shares the news with his workmates but can only make them believe it is true by admitting he heard it on the radio - his radio - a statement that makes him both a liar and a giver of hope.
