Susanne

The central characters of this video course are a group of teenagers from Hamburg whom students follow as they work on restoring an old boat, the "Susanne" of the title. Over 10 episodes, students watch them deal with the issues of friendship, competition and family relationships relevant to all teenagers as they try to pay for, and complete, work on the "Susanne". Black and white video stills are used throughout the "Schulermagazin" for students to describe and interpret situations and feelings and create dialogue based on events seen in the film. Each chapter contains information on different aspects of German life such as families, school, music, food and characteristics of the Germans themselves. The layout is uncluttered and designed to hold students interest by combining reading comprehension and blank-filling exercises with word games, puzzles and topics for discussion. For students who have some knowledge of German, "Susanne" is a fun and easy way to learn and practise German.
