Most translations have lost their bite after 20 or 30 years. After fully 60 years Roy Pascal's translation of Goethe's verse drama Iphigenia in Tauris miraculously hasn't. It was used for two productions on the BBC's Third Programme in 1954 and 1966, but now appears for the first time in print. Martin Swales writes in his Preface: "This translation is a matchless example of German poetry rendered into English by a master. It is remarkable for its immediacy and urgency. It could have been written today." Goethe's version of the Iphigenia-Orestes legend has much to say to our time. The female identity of the central character is crucial. By her own unaided human efforts Agamemnon's daughter Iphigenia breaks the endless cycle of bloodletting of the Tantalid curse, saving the life of her brother Orestes who has murdered his mother because she murdered his father.
